At first glance "Amsterdam Ceiling Fan" (60 x 60 cm) shows a familiar Amsterdam scene, canal houses and bridges. But quietly floating above it all, a ceiling fan.I made this work to reflect on the growing tension between urban life and environmental change. “Amsterdam Ceiling Fan” refers to the so called Urban Heat Island effect. Cities like Amsterdam trapping heat and amplifying temperatures. A phenomenon that will only increase with climate change. The bright colours and restless waves in the canal symbolise that something is shifting. The scene may seem playful at first, but there’s an underlying urgency. Well, even the most familiar places are changing. Weather we notice it or not.
