I recently completed "The Guest", inspired by the former Hotel Hamdorff in Laren, The Netherlands. For this painting, I explored its history, looking into archives and stories that brought the place back to life. I even talked with family of the founder Jan Hamdorff, to get a good feeling about this place. In my interpretation, a contemporary visitor arrives at the site that no longer exists, now imagined as being slowly taken over by nature. What was once vibrant and full of life has disappeared, yet still feels present. Well, finishing the painting feels a bit like closing a chapter, it has been a fascinating project to work on...
